Biden, Marcos set to meet as tensions grow with China

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is set to host President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. of the Philippines for White House talks Monday as concerns grow about the Chinese navy’s harassment of Philippine vessels in the South China Sea. Marcos’ visit to Washington comes after the U.S. and Philippines last week completed their largest war drills ever and as the two countries’ air forces on Monday will hold their first joint fighter jet training in the Philippines since 1990. The Philippines this year agreed to give the U.S. access to four more bases on the islands as the U.S. looks to deter China’s increasingly aggressive actions toward Taiwan and in the disputed South China Sea.Meanwhile, China has angered the Philippines by repeatedly harassing its navy and coast guard patrols and chasing away fishermen in waters close to Philippine shores but which Beijing claims as its own. CHICAGO — A 16-year-old boy was injured after they were shot in a drive-by shooting late Saturday night in Roseland, according to police.Chicago Police Department officers found the boy shot in the arm around 11:10 p.m. in the 100 block of West 92nd Street. DENVER (KDVR) -- The Molnar quadruplets don't just have a birth date in common – they're also all very smart. All four siblings are graduating with different degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs from Metropolitan State University in Denver. The quadruplets were born at 33.5 weeks. The firstborn was Luke Molnar, the only boy out of the four. Then a minute after him was Abigail, then Julia, and finally Rachael. "On our birth certificates it says 11:59 p.m. for both of us (Julia and Rachael) so we're always a little suspicious was it October 14th or was it the 15th?" Rachael said.Now, more than 20 years later, Julia is graduating with a degree in advanced manufacturing with a concentration in aerospace. (WJW) — Actor Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease when he was 29 years old. The incurable brain disorder has caused him tremors, stiffness and sometimes trouble walking and talking. A new documentary called "Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie" is coming out on Apple TV+ next month detailing his struggles and triumphs over the past decades. The "Back to the Future" and "Family Ties" star recently spoke with CBS Sunday Morning's Jane Pauley about the film and how he's approaching the future. ST. LOUIS - Two people were injured in a house fire Sunday morning in south St. Louis. One victim remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.Around 7:30 a.m., the St. Louis Fire Department received a call for a large fire in south St. Louis. Upon arrival, the two-story family home off Louisiana Avenue could be seen burning up with heavy smoke.“It was probably two rooms fully-involved with fire coming out three windows of the home,” said St. Louis Fire Battalion Chief, Mike Fitzgerald. “There was heavy smoke in the residence.”Fitzgerald shared that preliminary information indicated that the fire took over a bedroom, and then it spread to the rest of the floor.Firefighters quickly put it out, but not before saving two people, with one person trapped at the time. The Suncor Energy oil refinery in Commerce City released high levels of air pollution because of a malfunction Friday, according to a warning issued Saturday afternoon by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment.It’s the second time this month that state health officials have warned about high air pollution from the refinery just north of Denver. The pollutants can cause people in the area to have asthma attacks or issues breathing while exercising outdoors.The latest malfunction happened in Plant 1’s sulfur recovery equipment and caused “significant releases of excess air pollutants,” including sulfur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide, according to the state health department.The release began around 11 p.m. Friday and the emissions were dropping by early Saturday morning, though the polluted air was expected to linger through the day Saturday. A 4.3 magnitude earthquake rattled Southern California’s Imperial Valley late Saturday evening, sending shockwaves that could be felt for many miles. The quake struck at 11:58:20 p.m. and was centered 4 miles west-southwest of Niland and just east of the Salton Sea, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
