His head wobbled and soon he could barely stand, so his owner, Colleen Briggs, rushed him to the vet.The good doctor quickly made a diagnosis: Bondi was stoned. On his walk, a sniff must have led Bondi to a discarded joint, which he ate.“He was just doing his usual — exploring everything, sniffing everything,” said Briggs, who began to notice the pot shops sprouting up around New York City, the frequent whiffs of marijuana while circling her Manhattan neighborhood and the unfinished joints now littering sidewalks. In places like New York City, where the first legal recreational pot dispensary opened last year, users can smoke it in the open. As a result, more dogs are coming across — and eating — discarded joints and edibles, prompting alarm among veterinarians and pet owners who blame the steep rise in poisonings on smokers oblivious to the harm they can do by littering.Marijuana ...

Australian central bank hikes interest rate to 3.85%

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia’s central bank on Tuesday surprised markets by increasing its benchmark interest rate by a quarter percentage point to 3.85% despite pausing its climb last month and new evidence that inflation is slowing. The Reserve Bank of Australia’s meeting on April 4 was the first in a year to leave rates on hold to allow time for the bank’s board to observe the impacts of recent hikes. Most economists expected the cash rate would remain steady at 3.6% at the bank’s May meeting. Last week, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reported that inflation in the March quarter had slowed to 7% from 7.8% in December. But bank Gov. Philip Lowe said inflation remained too far outside his bank’s target range of 2% to 3%.“Inflation in Australia has passed its peak, but at 7% is still too high and it will be some time yet before it is back in the target range,” Lowe said in a statement. “While the recent data showed a welcome decline in inflation, the central forecast rema...

YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) — Trevor Bauer will pitch his first official game for the Yokohama DeNA BayStars on Wednesday and, to promote the start, a local department store is to unveil a seven-story poster of the former Cy Young winner on the building’s facade.Bauer was unwanted this season by major league teams — at least no club signed him though he was eligible to play — after claims of domestic violence and sexual assault. However, he’s a baseball celebrity in this famous port city in Japan, with few questions asked about his past — and his answers readily accepted.Small replica posters of the department store version dot train stations around town spelling out “Bauer” in English with the message in Japanese — “He’s here.”“My face it too big,” Bauer said recently, breaking into a seldom-seen laugh with reporters. “It’s very cool. It’s very cool. Growing up as a kid you see professional athletes and movie stars on billboards like that; kind of cool for me...
