OAKLAND – Oakland A’s catcher Shea Langeliers hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Aledmys Díaz and Brent Rooker followed that with solo homers in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively. But once again, the A’s allowed too many runs — and far too many free passes – for Oakland’s offense to keep up.The A’s pitching staff continued a historically bad start to the season Friday, allowing 11 hits, and an Oakland-record 17 walks Friday in a 17-6 loss to the New York Mets before an announced crowd of 11,102 at the Coliseum.James Kaprielian walked a career-high seven batters and allowed six earned runs, including a second-inning grand slam to Francisco Lindor, in just 3 2/3 innings, his shortest outing in three starts this season. The A’s bullpen didn’t fare much better against the Mets, Lindor in particular. After Langeliers’ home run — his third of the season — cut the Mets’ lead to 6-3 after four innings, the Mets essentially put the game away...SF Film Festival screening formerly incarcerated filmmaker's documentary

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – With statistics showing that violent crime is low in San Francisco, some city leaders say the focus still needs to be on other crimes. A new survey released by the city controller’s office shows residents’ perception of safety is the lowest it’s been since the 1990s.Break-ins at two small businesses here on Noriega Street served as a reminder that property crime is still a problem. District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio says these crimes cannot be ignored, and the latest report from the city’s controller’s office should be a wake-up call for city government. Bob Lee was confronted by accused killer about sister: court documents The Vietnamese and Chinese restaurants were both hit by burglars in San Francisco’s Sunset District. Glass was shattered, cultural decorations were smashed, and cash was stolen.“This is the type of crime we need to remain focused on,” Engardio said. “This is the type of crime that is making people feel unsafe in San Francisco.”Engardio s...Kelenic homers for 4th straight game, Mariners beat Rockies

PUERTOLLANO, Spain (AP) — In Spain, the dream of an emissions-free future for heavy industry starts with a rugged Castilian hillside covered in solar panels, and ends with an ice-cold beer. When the beer will be available, and how much it will cost, depends on an intervening rollout of green hydrogen. This Mediterranean nation wants to become the European leader in hydrogen produced exclusively from renewable energy. With plenty of sunshine and wind and wide-open countryside to host those power sources, Spain’s ambition is to export the gas to the rest of the continent. Green hydrogen is created when renewable energy sources power an electrical current that runs through water, separating its hydrogen and oxygen molecules through electrolysis. The result does not produce planet-warming carbon dioxide, but less than 0.1% of global hydrogen production is currently created this way.As the global price of solar power continues to fall, Spain is betting that it can rapidly build a new supp...Japanese PM unhurt after blast during campaign event

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was evacuated unharmed Saturday after someone threw an explosive device at a campaign event in a western port city, officials said. Police wrestled a suspect to the ground as screaming bystanders scrambled to get away and smoke filled the air.Although no one was hurt, and Kishida planned to continue campaigning Saturday, the chaotic scene was reminiscent of the assassination nine months ago of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, which also came on a campaign tour and continues to reverberate in Japanese politics. Kishida was visiting the Saikazaki port in Wakayama prefecture to support his ruling party’s candidate in a local election, and the explosion occurred just before he was to begin his speech. A young man believed to be a suspect was arrested Saturday at the scene after he allegedly threw the explosive, NHK said. BEIJING (AP) — Chinese basketball authorities have ordered an investigation into a championship-round game that ended with a last-minute, come-from-behind win following a series of turnovers. The investigation points to continuing suspicions about wide-spread corruption in Chinese sports, with the nation’s top-flight professional soccer league particularly hard-hit.In Friday’s Game 3 of the first round of the Chinese Basketball Association playoffs, the Jiangsu Dragons led the Shanghai Sharks 100-96 with 1 minute, 36 seconds left to play. The Dragons then committed a series of turnovers over the next minute, giving the Sharks a 10-point lead. The game ended in a 108-104 win for Shanghai and a 2-1 victory in the series, sending them into the quarterfinals. Fans immediately cried foul and the CBA, headed by former Houston Rockets eight-time NBA all-star Yao Ming, announced Saturday it was demanding answers. “The Chinese Basketball Association has paid great attention to the CBA playof...Beijing strikes cautionary tone on protests in Hong Kong

HONG KONG (AP) — China’s senior official overseeing Hong Kong’s affairs said Saturday that protests are not the only way for people to express their views, weeks after the city’s strict protest rules sparked controversy while signaling Beijing’s vision for the financial hub. Xia Baolong, director of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office, said the anti-government movement sparked by an extradition bill in 2019 is a scar that will not fade away and he warned against a repeat of such chaos.Xia’s remarks at a ceremony on China’s National Security Education Day indicated Beijing’s views on the city, which is promoting its return to normalcy following strict pandemic-related restrictions and political turmoil over the past three years. Hong Kong, a former British colony, returned to Chinese rule in 1997 and was promised it could keep its Western-style civil liberties intact for 50 years after the handover.
