Here’s the thing about moral victories: They show up in the loss column. There’s only a handful of positives for the New England Patriots after a 25-20 season-opening loss to the Philadelphia Eagles:* Turnovers on consecutive plays from scrimmage in the first quarter put the Pats in a 16-0 hole, but they picked themselves up and fought to the end.* A decimated offensive line, and a game plan designed to make that less worrisome, allowed Mac Jones to attempt more than 50 passes. Credit Jones for hanging in there and new OC Bill O’Brien.* The Patriots defense showed up. They held the defending NFC champs to just 251 yards and 17 first downs. So kudos to the Pats for being able to be within hailing distance of a win in the final minutes. But the messy early mistakes were just too much to overcome. The Patriots are 0-1, and host AFC East rival Miami next Sunday night. The Dolphins got a huge win in Los Angeles, beating the Chargers 36-34 behind Tua Tagovaliloa’s 46...California bill to simplify language for ballot referendums signed into law

SAN DIEGO (KSWB) -- A California bill to change the language on ballots for state referendums in order to make it clear what voters are deciding with their choice was signed into law on Friday by Gov. Gavin Newsom.Assembly Bill 421, which was introduced by Assemblymember Isaac Bryan, originally sought to make major changes to the state's referendum process, which is used to overturn laws passed by legislators.Among the changes it proposed included requirements for those out collecting signatures for these measures to register and receive training with the Secretary of State, and to disclose if they are volunteers or paid. It would also implement a three-year ban if someone violates the law. Bill to ‘counteract book banning’ passes California Assembly and Senate However, most of the original provisions were scrapped by legislators as it was amended. The version of the bill that was signed into law Friday focused on one change: changing the options for referendums from "yes" and "no...TIFF’23: The Zone of Interest is the most idiosyncratic Holocaust film in history

It’s been nearly 80 years since the end of the Holocaust, the deadliest and most devastating mass genocide in human history. 6 million Jewish people were killed, as well as 5.7 million Soviet civilians, and up to 3 million Polish people among many others. It’s important to not forget the evil of the Holocaust, lest something like this happen again. But what is not known as well about the Holocaust are the people who perpetrated it. We all know it was the Nazis who committed this genocide in an efficient manner, keeping records of daily deaths. But when they weren’t counting the bodies and stealing the clothes and valuables left behind, what kind of people were they? How did they sleep at night? The Zone of Interest is one of the more horrifying films I've ever seen, but not because of what it shows. It's because of what it doesn't show. #TIFF23— James Mackin @ TIFF 23 (@JamesMackin10) September 11, 2023The Zone of Interest is a Holocaust drama unli...Highland Park parade shooting suspect to return to court

NEW YORK (AP) — Novak Djokovic emerged from an exhilarating and exhausting U.S. Open final with a 24th Grand Slam title on Sunday night, using every ounce of his energy and some serve-and-volley guile to get past Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in a match that was more closely contested than the straight-set score indicated.Djokovic, a 36-year-old from Serbia, moved one major singles title in front of Serena Williams to become the first player to win 24 in the Open era, which began in 1968. Margaret Court also collected a total of 24, but 13 of those came before professionals were admitted to the Slam events. There were moments, particularly in the 1-hour, 44-minute second set that was as much about tenacity as talent, when Djokovic appeared to be faltering. After some of the most grueling points — and there were many — he would lean over with hands on knees or use his racket for support or pause to stretch his legs. This triumph against Medvedev, the o...Will the Vikings have center Garrett Bradbury for their next game?

Maybe it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Vikings looked out of sorts on offense in the early stages of Sunday’s season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.A couple of possessions into the game, starting center Garrett Bradbury walked into the medical tent with a lower back injury and did not return in the 20-17 loss. Now his status for Thursday’s primetime game against the Philadelphia Eagles is up in the air.“I would classify him as day-to-day,” head coach Kevin O’Connell said. “Whether Garrett is able to turn over on a short week or it’ll be (backup center Austin Scholttmann) out there, whatever combination we decide to go with, we’ll put together the plan that works while hopefully getting Garrett back as soon as we can.”Asked how he thought Scholttmann played in relief, quarterback Kirk Cousins praised him for stepping up.“We have great players,” Cousins said. “I think Austin Schlottmann did a...Clayton Memorial Stair Climb honors firefighters killed on 9/11
