The trial for a former school resource officer accused of failing to protect students during the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas entered its second week. During the shooting, Scot Peterson took cover outside the building where shots were being fired and remained in place for more than 40 minutes.Seventeen people were killed in the shooting. Peterson maintains he was unsure where the gunfire was coming from. On Monday, attorneys for the former deputy explained to jurors that their client wasn’t the only officer that was on the scene during the deadly day who did not know where the gunfire came from. An officer testified that it is impossible to truly prepare for such an event. “We are human beings, so we’re gonna have those feelings, said Coral Springs Police Officer Tim Burton. “Training helps out tremendously, but like I said, we are human and sometimes our human emotions take over.”The trial is expected to continue for several weeks. By MIKE CATALINI and MARC LEVY (Associated Press)State and federal investigators were trying to find out Monday why a tanker fire collapsed a section of the East Coast’s main north-south highway, throwing hundreds of thousands of morning commutes into chaos and disrupting commerce for untold numbers of businesses.Interstate 95 will be closed in both directions for weeks at the start of summer travel season. Motorists should expect extensive delays and street closures, and avoid the northeast corner of the sixth-largest city in the country, transportation officials said. The accident also disrupted the car route from Canada to Florida through the Boston, New York and Washington metropolitan areas, increasing Americans’ dependence on air travel and the interstate rail network.Pennsylvania Transportation Secretary Michael Carroll said the I-95 segment carries roughly 160,000 vehicles per day and was likely the busiest interstate in Pennsylvania.Sunday morning’s fire s...

Trump traveling to Florida as history-making court appearance approaches in classified docs case

By ERIC TUCKER and JILL COLVIN (Associated Press)WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump was traveling to Florida on Monday ahead of a history-making federal court appearance this week on dozens of felony charges accusing him of illegally hoarding classified documents and thwarting the Justice Department’s efforts to get the records back.Trump’s Tuesday afternoon appearance in Miami will mark his second time since April facing a judge on criminal charges. But unlike a New York case some legal analysts derided as relatively trivial, the Justice Department’s first prosecution of a former president concerns conduct that prosecutors say jeopardized national security, with Espionage Act charges carrying the prospect of a significant prison sentence.Ahead of his court date, he and his allies have been escalating efforts to undermine the criminal case against him and drum up protests. He’s ratcheted up the rhetoric against the Justice Department special counsel who fil...

Column: Lake County officials have nothing to lose by making a pitch for the Bears

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 19:06:30 GMT

As long as real bears are roaming Lake County, we might as well make a pitch for the gridiron Bears. Seems like other locales are trying to lure them, so perhaps county economic development officials have a new stadium package prepared for the team.Folks may have missed the black bear sightings last week first lumbering near Gurnee Mills, then in the backyard of an Antioch-area home. State wildlife officials didn’t seem too upset about a rare bear encounter. The ursine sightings must be the first such in the county, although we have had bison and cougar visitors in the past. Black bears were once common in the county until our forefathers disposed of them in the late 1870s in favor of farms and pioneer housing. With the glimpse of the beasts at least Lake County can claim there’s some real bears here, compared to those suburbs who want to be the eventual home of the Monsters of the Midway.Having a new Chicago Bears stadium in Lake County would piggyback on the team’s...
