Even as many Silicon Valley residents pack up and leave for more affordable places like Pheonix, Las Vegas and even Seattle, U.S. News and World Report has ranked San Jose the second best area of the country in which to raise a family. The news publication, known for its voluminous rankings and lists, looked at factors including cost of living, average salary, quality of high school education and crime rates to determine the most desirable metro areas for families looking to relocate. The San Jose metro, which includes Santa Clara and San Benito counties, owed its high ranking in large part to having the best college readiness among high school students, according to U.S. News. The downside, of course: sky-high housing costs, with a typical single-family home going for more than $1.5 million. The report revealing the list notes, however, that San Jose’s average income of $99,430 a year is well above the national average of $58,260. But that’s little comfort for many familie...4-year-old girl killed, parents injured in crash near Oracle Park, driver arrested

(BCN) -- As San Francisco parks officials plan to transform United Nations Plaza into a skateboarding and recreation haven, a longstanding farmers' market will be relocating close by. Market leaders consider the move to be a "logistical nightmare." San Francisco's Recreation and Park Department first proposed a pilot project in July to make U.N. Plaza -- currently considered the epicenter of the city's open drug market and overdose crisis -- safer and more inviting to residents. If all goes to plan, the 150,000-square-foot plaza in the city's Civic Center will begin construction in September to be transformed into a skate park and recreation space. The Las Vegas Raiders removed first-round draft pick Tyree Wilson off the non-football injury list on Wednesday, and wide receiver Davante Adams returned to practice after a short absence.Wilson, a defensive end drafted seventh overall, was placed on that injury list before training camp because of a foot injury suffered last season at Texas Tech. He also didn’t participate in organized team activities or minicamp. There was no corresponding move because Wilson already was on the active roster.“He’s progressing the way we thought he would,” Las Vegas coach Josh McDaniels said. “Now it’s kind of time to take the next step here and get him on the field and get him in his pads and start working toward the ability to be in team drills. We’ll try to take it at the right pace as we go.”The Raiders hope Wilson will be a part of the rotation this season that includes Maxx Crosby and Chandler Jones and aid a pass rush that ranked 30th in the NFL last season. EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Northwestern interim coach David Braun says he’s “really confident” the Wildcats will hear more cheers than jeers, at least at home. He expects a warm reception for the first game at Ryan Field despite a hazing and abuse scandal that has also engulfed other men’s and women’s teams at the school.“I certainly hope that this community, our alumni, all those that are associated with Northwestern University and Northwestern athletics will come out and show full support for 103 young men that have worked their butts off over the course of the last four weeks and have come together to do something really special,” Braun said Wednesday. “To be honest with you, I’m really confident that that’s exactly what’s gonna happen.”Northwestern opens the season with a Sunday afternoon game at Rutgers on Sept. 3, and hosts UTEP six days later. The Wildcats know they could be in for some pointed taunting when they go on the road this season....Juan Martín del Potro says he isn’t healthy enough to return and play at the US Open

NEW YORK (AP) — Juan Martín del Potro decided his body wasn’t ready for a comeback at the U.S. Open. The 2009 champion wrote Wednesday in a social media post that he wasn’t healthy enough to make the return he coveted.Del Potro told The Associated Press in April that he wanted to “play a farewell match” in Flushing Meadows this year if his right knee would allow it. The U.S. Tennis Association said at the time it would welcome the popular Argentinian back, but he was not listed among the players who received wild cards into the main draw Wednesday.Hours later, he revealed that he wasn’t comfortable enough with his health and would continue searching for other solutions.Wrist injuries had previously limited the powerful right arm that helped del Potro beat Roger Federer to win the 2009 title. He eventually recovered enough to get back to the final in 2018, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. But then right knee injuries sidelined him from June 2019 until one match in Arg...Torkelson homers twice against the Twins again, leading the Tigers to an 8-7 victory

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Spencer Torkelson homered twice against Minnesota for the second time in a week, and the Detroit Tigers survived a late scare for an 8-7 victory over the Twins on Wednesday.Torkelson lifted Griffin Jax’s 1-1 sweeper into the left-field seats at Target Field to give the Tigers a 6-4 lead in a four-run seventh inning, giving the second-year first baseman his fourth career multi-homer game. His previous one came last Wednesday against the Twins in Detroit.“I feel like I’ve seen the ball well, I have a good solid approach; I’m trusting that even when … I don’t feel amazing at the plate,” said Torkelson, who has six homers in his past seven games. “I feel like I can still compete up there and and get the job done, which is more … rewarding than when you’re up there feeling sexy and like you can hit everything, because that’s what’s supposed to happen. But when you can figure out a way to grind out days that you don’t really feel great — that’s a...MLB commissioner throws support behind new stadium for the Kansas City Royals

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred threw his support behind a new stadium for the Royals on Wednesday, calling both of their potential sites near downtown Kansas City “unbelievably high quality” for the type of revenue-producing, multi-use districts that are necessary for small-market clubs to compete.Manfred spoke for an hour at the Urban Youth Academy, which is designed to encourage inner-city youth in baseball, alongside Royals chairman John Sherman and Bob Kendrick, the president of the nearby Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. The Royals plan to announce in September whether they will build a replacement for Kauffman Stadium in the East Village, an area near the T-Mobile Center and the existing Power & Light District, or across the Missouri River in Clay County, where there is more land available for a potentially larger baseball village.“This is a tremendous opportunity for this community — forget the Royals,” Manfred said. “Either of these sites are out...Latest news
