Minnesota Gophers sophomore forward Matthew Knies was named Big Ten Player of the Year on Tuesday, one of the top honors in college hockey.In all, the Gophers grabbed three of the conference’s five major awards. Team captain Brock Faber repeated as the Big Ten defensive player of the year, while Bob Motzko was named the conference’s coach of the year for the second year in a row, and for the third time in his five years as Minnesota’s head coach.It is the second consecutive year that a Gopher has been named the Big Ten’s top player, with Ben Meyers winning the award in 2022.Notre Dame senior Ryan Bischel – who hails from Medina, Minn., and was a prep standout at Benilde-St. Margaret’s – was voted goaltender of the year. ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Assemblyman Angelo Santabarbara introduces a bill to increase the maximum speed limit for certain roadways to 70 mph. The bill allows the commissioner of the department of transportation to increase the speed limit on state roadways that meet department criteria for the new maximum speed. CHESTERTOWN, N.Y. (NEWS10) - Earlier this month, a 19-year-old woman with a behavioral issue was arrested in Chestertown. Officers from the Warren County Sheriff's Office responded after a woman caused property damage and fled the scene in someone else's vehicle. On Wednesday, March 1, Bela Simonson, of Olmsteadville, was arrested after smashing through a window at Buckman's Family Fuel Co. at 6259 Route 9 in Chestertown. HERMANN, Mo. – The Gasconade County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged a 35-year-old man with a double shooting that left one Hermann, Missouri, police officer dead and another injured.Kenneth Lee Simpson, of Steelville, was charged Tuesday with first-degree murder, first-degree assault - special victim, unlawful possession of a firearm, and two counts of armed criminal action.The shooting happened just after 9:05 p.m. Sunday, March 12, at the Casey’s General Store on Market Street in Hermann. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday proposed the first federal limits on harmful “forever chemicals” in drinking water, a long-awaited protection the agency said will save thousands of lives and prevent serious illnesses, including cancer.The plan would limit toxic PFAS chemicals to the lowest level that tests can detect. PFAS, or per- and polyfluorinated substances, are a group of compounds that are widespread, dangerous and expensive to remove from water. They don’t degrade in the environment and are linked to a broad range of health issues, including low birthweight and kidney cancer.“The science is clear that long-term exposure to PFAS is linked to significant health risks,” Radhika Fox, assistant EPA administrator for water, said in an interview.Fox called the federal proposal a “transformational change” for improving the safety of drinking water in the United States.
