Court says no, Polish government says go on coal mine permit

WARSAW — The Polish government said it will ignore a court ruling suspending an environmental permit for one of the country’s largest lignite coal mines. The ruling was issued by a Warsaw court on May 31 and made public on Tuesday. The case had been filed by Polish, Czech and German environmental groups, complaining about an environmental permit issued last year for an expansion of the Turów mine located near the Czech and German borders in southwestern Poland. The court found that the permit — valid from 2026 to 2044 — was issued in breach of EU environmental regulations. “It should be pointed out that the probability that the [permit] is defective cannot be ruled out,” the court said, adding: “Further mining under the conditions set out in the permit … may lead to irreversible damage not only to the environment, but may also have a negative impact on the health of the inhabitants of nearby towns.”That set off a storm of protest from the Polish government.“We’re def...

By NICOLE WINFIELD and MARIA CHENG (Associated Press)ROME (AP) — Pope Francis was admitted to the hospital for surgery Wednesday to repair a hernia in his intestine, the latest malady to befall the 86-year-old pontiff who had part of his colon removed two years ago.Francis was expected to be put under general anesthesia for the open abdominal surgery and remain at Rome’s Gemelli hospital for several days, the Vatican said. While hernia operations are rarely performed on an emergency basis, the procedure appeared somewhat urgent, scheduled just a day after Francis went to the hospital for tests. The pontiff’s doctors no doubt also wanted to give him ample time for recovery ahead of a busy travel schedule later this summer. The pope was suffering from a “painful and worsening” hernia that formed over a previous scar, presumably from his 2021 colon surgery. Experts said the formation of the hernia, called a laparocele, is a known complication from intestina...

BELLAIRE, Mich. (AP) — A man accused of assisting the leaders in a plot to kidnap Michigan’s governor pleaded guilty Wednesday, the ninth conviction in state and federal courts since agents broke up an astonishing scheme by anti-government rebels in 2020.Shawn Fix said he provided material support for an act of terrorism, namely the strategy to snatch Gov. Gretchen Whitmer at her vacation home in Antrim County. Prosecutors agreed to drop a weapon charge. Prosecutors have said they had evidence that Fix trained with a militia, the Wolverine Watchmen, for “politically motivated violence” and hosted a five-hour meeting at his Belleville home where there was much discussion about kidnapping Whitmer.Fix, 40, helped plot leader Adam Fox pinpoint the location of Whitmer’s second home, key information that was used for a 2020 ride to find the property in northern Michigan, prosecutors said in a court filing.Fix appeared in an Antrim County court, one of five people charged in that leg of th...

The smoke continues to linger across the GTA and it is even more pronounced today than earlier in the week. Bluer skies are not in the forecast until we get a change in the wind direction later this week. The smoky haze is still suspended in the atmosphere and is coming from the wildfires that continue to rage on in northern Ontario and in Quebec. The gusty northerly and northeasterly winds are shipping the smoke into our area, which can impact everyone’s health, especially for those with respiratory sensitivities. The smoke may dissipate a little bit during Wednesday afternoon and evening but the smoke will return and be even more thick by the overnight hours of Thursday and last through most of the day. The smoke is still expected to be around for Friday but improvements may be on the way for the weekend with the winds shifting to the southeast, that essentially wil...
