STANFORD – There was no record-breaking comeback this time. Just another blowout loss to a ranked opponent.Stanford fell 42-7 to UCLA on Saturday night its last scheduled game against a team it has played every year since World War II.The 25th-ranked Bruins (5-2, 2-2 Pac-12) led 21-0 at halftime. It was the second straight game that Stanford (2-5, 1-4) had been shut out in the first half, after the Cardinal trailed 29-0 at Colorado. But while Stanford engineered the biggest comeback in school history against the Buffaloes, it couldn’t close the gap this time.Instead, the results were similar to Stanford’s other games against ranked opponents this season – a 56-10 loss to No. 18 USC and a 42-6 loss to No. 9 Oregon.“Got off to another slow start,” coach Troy Taylor said. “Against a really good football team, you can’t get behind like that. Last week we were able to come back and this week we just didn’t start well in any of the three phases and didn’t do enough to ge...Castro Valley man freed in controversial homicide case that was reduced from murder to involuntary manslaughter

OAKLAND — A Castro Valley man was freed from jail after pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter, the same day prosecutors moved to downgrade his charge from murder, court records show.James Vega, 28, was originally charged with murder in the 2020 shooting of 28-year-old Jarin Purvis in Castro Valley. The case remained unchanged until last June, when District Attorney Pamela Price released a public statement announcing the charge was being re-filed as an involuntary manslaughter after determining the shooting was unintentional.Vega entered a guilty plea on June 23, just seconds after prosecutors moved to re-file the case, and was released from jail by the end of the court’s hearing. On Sept. 18, he was formally sentenced to the maximum term of four years and eight months — a sentence that, with good behavior credits, Vega had already served in county jail. He remains out of jail.Annie Beles, a local defense attorney who represented Vega, called the shooting an &...Woman fatally shot while driving in East Oakland

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia’s leading presidential hopeful named outgoing President Joko Widodo’s eldest son as his running mate in next year’s election in Southeast Asia’s largest democracy. The announcement late Sunday by Prabowo Subianto — a former special forces general who currently serves as defense minister — that he had chosen Gibran Rakabuming Raka as his vice-presidential candidate ended weeks of fevered speculation in the Indonesian media. Gibran, 36, serves as mayor of Surakarta, Widodo’s hometown in Central Java province. He does not meet the age requirement to run of 40 but the country’s Constitutional Court — headed by the president’s brother-in-law — made an exception in a ruling last week. It now allows those who served or had been elected as regional leaders to run at a younger age.The controversial ruling, which clears the way for Gibran to run in the election, has been widely criticized as nepotistic, with analysts warning it could undermine th...A police dog attacked a Black trucker on his knees. An Ohio city is dealing with the aftermath

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio (AP) — As Jadarrius Rose drove his 18-wheeler through rural Ohio, a simple missing mudflap caught the highway patrol’s eye. The trip ended with a police dog’s powerful jaws clamping down on Rose even as he tried to surrender. As he stood with his hands up beside the highway on July 4, at least six law enforcement officers surrounded him at a distance, one calling forcefully to the K-9 handler: “Do not release the dog,” highway patrol video shows.Nevertheless, a Belgian Malinois is seen on the video either breaking free or being set loose. At first, the animal seems confused, racing past Rose toward officers at the far end of the truck, then turning back and running for Rose, then 23.By then the trucker is on his knees, hands still high, as an officer shouts, “Get the dog off of him!”That day, Rose joined a long list of Black Americans attacked by police dogs, a history well documented by journalists, academics and filmmakers. The NFL has warned teams that any fights could result in significant punishment, including disqualification. In a memo sent to clubs on Wednesday and obtained by The Associated Press, the league said “fighting is never acceptable” and it plans to “strongly enforce” its game-day policies.Penalties include disqualification, significant fines and/or suspension without pay.The league is cracking down on fighting after pregame fights marred two games last week — the 49ers-Browns and Cowboys-Chargers.No players were disciplined for their actions pregame last week. The memo also emphasized three key points: Teams must warm up within their own 45-yard line, players or club personnel can be disqualified for actions that happen pregame and video will be used to determine if pregame actions warrant discipline after the fact.“Sportsmanship and respect are at the core of NFL football, and fighting is irreconcilable with these values,” the league said in the memo.___AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/n...Meloni breakup sparks calls to stop the moralizing

Opposition parties in Italy are using the breakup of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s relationship to lambaste the right-wing government for its preoccupation with the traditional family and conservative values.Giuseppe Conte, leader of the opposition anti-establishment 5Star Movement, called on the conservatives to “avoid laying out cultural models” after Meloni split up with her long-term partner and father of her child, Andrea Giambruno, after he was recorded making lewd comments to colleagues. “Our paths have diverged for some time, and the time has come to acknowledge it,” Meloni said on Friday in announcing her decision. Meloni was not married to Giambruno but has often espoused traditional family values and said that a child should have a mother and a father. Her government has put forward measures hostile to non-traditional and LGBT families. The Ministry of the Interior in March asked municipalities to stop recognizing and registering children of same-sex c...Unsanctioned coterie of pro-Israel quasi-lobbyists descends on D.C.

This past week, an unlikely pair of men sat down for breakfast at the Capitol Hill Club, a Republican gathering site just a stone’s throw from Congress, to plot ways to help Israel. On one side of the table was Rep. Paul Gosar, a firebrand Republican who has faced criticism for ties to white nationalists. On the other was Bobby Rechnitz, a Los Angeles real estate developer dubbed a “confidant” of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.Over coffee, the two discussed Israel’s former Prime Minister Golda Meir and the situation in Gaza. Rechnitz said he’d come to Washington to share real-time intelligence from Israel and to ensure lawmakers understood the challenges facing leadership there.“I hope to slightly enlighten the congressman about some of the things that I’m hearing,” he said. Rechnitz said he’s connected lawmakers with members of the Knesset, Israel’s governing body. He also uses a large iPad to show them photos of bullet-riddled bodies of babies and people burnt ...Latest news
