To celebrate its 50th anniversary, Lyric Theatre is staging three shows in repertory July 22-Aug. 6 and hosting a gala on July 30.The company kicks things off July 22 with a matinee of “Ragtime the Musical” and an evening performance of “The Best of Lerner and Loewe,” both at Hammer Theatre Center in downtown San Jose. Both shows run through Aug. 5.Nominated for 13 Tony Awards in 1998, “Ragtime” depicts racial tensions, infidelity and violence in early 1900s New York City. Terrence McNally’s book is based on the 1975 novel of the same name by E.L. Award with purposeCupertino’s Memorial Park Ponds Repurposing Project was this year’s winner of the American Public Works Association Silicon Valley Project of the Year Award for projects under $2 million.The $1.68 million project removed the concrete liner for the old ponds, which have been drained since 2013 in response to drought restrictions. (KRON) -- A small plane crash occurred Saturday night at the Smith Ranch Airport in San Rafael.Just before 11 p.m., a plane struck power lines and crashed in a marsh at the east end of the runway, creating a power outage for nearly 2,000 PG&E customers, according to the San Rafael Fire Department. Underground vault fire leads to explosion in SF’s Pacific Heights Two people were extricated from the plane and taken to local hospitals. (KRON) -- Rescue crews pulled out a dozen people from the water around the city due to strong winds on Saturday. Several children were among those rescued. One rescue involving two kite surfers happened around 5 p.m. at Point Lobos near Cliff House. Two kayakers were rescued near Pier 70 and eight kayakers, including six kids under the age of 15, were also rescued from behind Barry Bonds Jr. Giants Field. (BCN) -- A man and a woman suspected of fraud were taken into custody after ramming their truck into two patrol cars Friday, Palo Alto police said. Events unfolded about 5 p.m. when a man attempted to withdraw money from an account that didn't belong to him at First Tech Federal Credit Union at 3000 El Camino Real, police said Saturday. When the man got into a pickup truck in the credit union's parking lot, a police officer positioned his patrol car behind it, police said. The pickup abruptly reversed into the patrol car, then drove forward across a curb and sped off. Pedestrian struck, killed by car in San Jose Police pursued the truck to a dead end in the 400 block of Leland Avenue and again positioned a car behind it.
