Heisman Watch: USC’s Caleb Williams would join select company even if he finishes second Caleb Williams is chasing Heisman Trophy history on more than one level. The USC quarterback is attempting to join Ohio State running back Archie Griffin as the only repeat winners. But the list of Heisman honorees who finished second the following year is equally short. It includes Oklahoma running back Billy Sims, who won the Heisman in 1978 and was runner-up to USC’s Charles White in 1979, and nobody else.Even a third-place finish the succeeding year is high bar for the winners, with just six players accomplishing the feat: SMU running back Doak Walker, BYU quarterback Ty Detmer, Oklahoma quarterback Jason White, USC quarterback Matt Leinart, Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and Louisville quarterback Lamar JacksonWilliams has all the ingredients necessary to return to New York City as a finalist, from the brand power of his school to video-game statistics he produces each week to the big-stage showdowns looming in the heart of the season. But like so many other winners, William...

Warren Buffett’s company dumps another 5 million shares of printer maker HP OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Investors soon won’t be able to follow Warren Buffett’s every move in HP’s stock if the billionaire’s company keeps selling off shares of the printer and computer maker.Berkshire Hathaway’s ownership of HP Inc. is about to drop below 10% after it sold nearly 5 million shares, according to a regulatory filing by Buffett’s company late Monday. The Securities and Exchange Commission requires investors who own less than 10% of a company to report their company holdings only on a quarterly basis rather than big investors who must disclose their actions closer to the time of a so-called “triggering” event, which can mean buying or selling shares. Many investors do watch Buffett’s moves closely because of his extremely successful track record over the years. Not that long ago, Berkshire owned more than 12% of HP’s stock before it started to trim its stake last month. Now it’s down to 10.2% after several stock sales of the Palo Alt...

Woodruff’s shoulder injury leaves Brewers down a starter against Diamondbacks in Wild Card Series One of Milwaukee’s biggest strengths just got a little weaker on the eve of the postseason.Right-hander Brandon Woodruff, slated as a potential Game 3 starter, will miss the NL Wild Card Series with a shoulder injury, leaving the Brewers without one of the top arms against the Arizona Diamondbacks.“It’s tough to have one of your better arms go down,” Brewers Game 1 starter Corbin Burnes said on Monday. “Obviously we don’t know the extent of what’s going on and how long it’s going to be. But it means that it’s another opportunity for another guy to step up and fill his shoes and try to replicate what he would do out there on the mound.”When Milwaukee and Arizona last met, the Diamondbacks were atop the AL West and the Brewers were scuffling, barely above .500 at 38-36.That was June. The Brewers found the right gear, going 54-34 the rest of the way to win the NL Central by eight games. The Diamondbacks went through a few difficult stretches after the series in Milwaukee, finally ...

From the Avalanche down, there’s ‘never an easy night’ in the NHL’s Central Division Nathan MacKinnon didn’t feel right about how last season went for the Colorado Avalanche. Sure, they shook off their Stanley Cup hangover and won the Central Division but something was off. “I just don’t think we had the team to win last year,” MacKinnon said. “Just didn’t really feel like we really had it.”With extra rest from a first-round exit and the additions of Ryan Johansen, Miles Wood and Tomas Tatar filling some major voids, the Avalanche go into the season as favorites to win the Cup again. Just to get out of the Central, they will have to fend off Dallas coming off a trip to the Western Conference final and retooled Nashville, St. Louis and Winnipeg — and handle games against Chicago and Arizona that won’t be as easy as they were last year.“There’s never an easy night at the Central,” Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey said. “It’s a tough division to play. It’s always a grind. The games are physical.”The Avalanche are more physical with Wood, deeper down the middl...
