HVAC fixes could begin 'as soon as this summer' for some Austin ISD campuses

AUSTIN (KXAN) – School may be out for summer, but work is just getting started at some Austin ISD campuses, as the district tackles heating, ventilation, and air conditioning repairs or improvement projects.Over the last few years, KXAN investigators have been tracking tips from parents, teachers and students about hot classrooms and other maintenance issues. Thousands of air conditioning issues at Austin ISD schools this year Leadership has repeatedly pointed to aging facilities in need of new HVAC equipment or systems, rather than just repairs.“Some of them -- the original structures are over 100 years old. That means that equipment ages out and it's failing, and it's no longer a maintenance issue. It is a replacement issue,” said Michael Mann, AISD's executive director of construction management. A Boyle Heights charter school will be sending off its entire graduating class into four-year universities for the fourth time in five years.Forty-five seniors at Collegiate Charter High School of Los Angeles were celebrated earlier this month with a special "Senior Signing Day" ceremony to reveal which schools they plan to attend in the coming year.The ceremony holds special weight for Collegiate educators, as almost all of the graduating seniors come from low-income homes, many of which are Spanish-speaking immigrant families. The Boyle Heights school is in the middle of one of the densest populations of Latino families that live at or below the poverty level in the nation.The majority of seniors who will be attending college next year will be the first in their families to do so, the school says. Reports of an active shooter at the Ontario Mills Mall on Monday turned out to be false, according to Chief Mike Lorenz of the Ontario Police Department.Around 2 p.m. Monday, the Police Department sent out a tweet announcing that police officers were arriving at the mall following “reports of a disturbance” and asked those in the nearby vicinity to avoid the area.The Police Department stated that its dispatch center received multiple calls reporting that there was a person inside the mall who was armed with a gun. (KRON) -- The Santa Rosa Police Department reported two DUI crashes on Sunday. In both instances, drivers rammed into parked vehicles and were arrested. The first crash was reported in the area of Hoen Ave. and Summerfield Road. Police said the suspect's car hit a parked vehicle, drove off the north side of the roadway and overturned on the grass. Santa Rosa firefighters respond to fire at homeless encampment The driver, 35-year-old Santa Rosa resident Anthony Manos, and the passenger were both taken to a hospital. The passenger had moderate injuries, while Manos was hospitalized for precautionary reasons. Manos was arrested for felony DUI that caused injury to another person.
