Multiple families were forced to evacuate their homes in the Fairfax District of Los Angeles after an intense fire ripped through a parking garage and destroyed two vehicles. No one was injured in Saturday morning’s fire, and firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before they spread to any apartment buildings. The blaze took place around 2 a.m. Saturday morning in the 400 block of North Curson Avenue and follows a series of other arsons in the Fairfax District that have left residents on edge. One man had his 1991 Ford F-150 torched on South Orange Drive on Wednesday, and the same arsonist may have also targeted another woman’s vehicle just one block away. Some advocates say it doesn’t go far enough

Santa Clara County has released a slew of recommendations to help reduce the jail population — focusing heavily on mental health efforts — but some criminal justice reform advocates assert they don’t go far enough and won’t create any meaningful change. The recommendations — presented to the board this past week — ranged from reducing the time people spend in custody by adding more people to conduct mental health assessments and creating a less criminally focused mental health facility to increasing access to social support systems for individuals leaving jail.Supervisor Susan Ellenberg had asked that the county come up with some alternatives to incarceration last year when the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors was reviewing whether to move forward with a $390 million proposed jail. Since September, a group of advocates, members of law enforcement, county officials and other directly impacted individuals have met to develop a set of eight rec...High school baseball 2023: All-Bay Area News Group team

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesia’s authorities on Saturday deported an Australian surfer who apologized for attacking several people while drunk and naked in the deeply conservative Muslim province of Aceh. Bodhi Mani Risby-Jones, 23, from Queensland, was detained in late April on Simeulue Island, a surf resort, after police accused him of going on a drunken rampage that left a fisherman with serious injuries.“Of course I’m pretty emotional, so I’m going to feel bad about it,” Risby-Jones said while waiting for his flight to Melbourne. He said the fisherman’s relatives forgave him and told him that he was a part of their family now. “I’m welcome to come back and even stay at their house whenever I want,” he said.“So, that feeling of guilt is definitely much smaller that it was originally,” he said.He was released from prison on Tuesday after he went through a restorative justice process, apologized for the attack and agreed to pay compensation to the fisherman.
