49ers trade Trey Lance: Is he better off in Dallas?

Having been around a team that pushed all its chips into the middle of the table for JaMarcus Russell and come up empty, it’s clear the damage that can be done to a franchise that whiffs with a premium draft pick on its quarterback of the future. The 49ers aren’t the Raiders, though, and Trey Lance is the farthest thing from Russell in terms of commitment and dedication. I was covering an Andre Ward fight at Oracle Arena in 2010 and when Russell came in fashionably late: The booing was so fierce Ward appeared confused while he wailed away at an overmatched opponent against the ropes. The last time Lance played for the 49ers, in the second preseason game, he was greeted by cheers from the home crowd at Levi’s Stadium. The Lance gamble was a regrettable mistake — coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch admitted as much in postgame press conferences late Friday night — but it’s hardly the ruination of the franchise. The effect in future years ...California conservative groups promote anti-trans bills as state AB sues school district over anti-trans policy

The battle over transgender rights is heating up in California, where the state sued a Southern California school district on Monday while conservatives launched an effort for a statewide ballot measure.Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against Chino Valley Unified School District over its parental notification policy that took effect in July and requires district schools to alert parents if a student begins using a name or pronoun different from the one on their official records. The same day, Republican lawmakers and conservative activists rallied at the state Capitol to announce they are starting signature-backed ballot initiatives for three bills targeting transgender students, after a recent related bill failed to gain ground in the Democrat-controlled legislature.“The forced outing policy wrongfully endangers the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of non-conforming students who lack an accepting environment in the classroom and at home,” Bonta said...San Jose: Son arrested on suspicion of killing father

NEW YORK (AP) — After throwing his first outdoor bullpen session following knee surgery, New York Mets All-Star closer Edwin Díaz remained hopeful he can make a mound return for the New York Mets this season. The 29-year-old right-hander tore his right patellar tendon on March 15 while celebrating after getting the final out of Puerto Riche’s win over the Dominican Republic at the World Baseball Classic. The projected timeline for a return was six-to-eight months.“My goal was to be ready in six months,” Díaz said Monday. “And I’m working on that.”Díaz said he was clocked in the low-to-mid 90s on Sunday, when he threw on an outdoor bullpen mound to a catcher in the crouching position for the first time since getting hurt.“I know my stuff is there,” Díaz said. “A main thing for me is how my knee is good and healthy, I feel healthy right now and I’m pitching again.
