What to watch: New ‘Great Expectations’ lives up to its literary legend An edgy “Great Expectations,” Zach Braff’s latest feature, a top-notch BritBox series and a sensational neo-noir from China stand out this week. Here’s our roundup.“Great Expectations”: In a rundown, dust-bunnied estate, a zonked-out Miss Havisham (Olivia Colman) takes a long pull on a pipe packed with opium; later she coerces poor Pip, the older orphaned teen whom she’s in charge of, into ditching his virginity via a sex worker awaiting his arrival in an upstairs bedroom. You might well ask what in the Charles Dickens is going on with FX’s racy, Gothic to the extreme adaptation of the classic novel nearly every high school kid got assigned (or saddled with)? The answer: A hell of a lot.And even though executive producer/writer Steven Knight (“Peaky Blinders,” “Taboo”) ups the kink factor and adds references to colonialism and other hot-button matters to Dickens’ durable yarn about a lad (played well by Tom Sweet and Fionn Whitehead) and his treacherous journey to better his own statio...

Senior driver Dick Van Dyke faces DMV test after California car crash Veteran actor Dick Van Dyke escaped serious injury in a solo car crash last week but a report said that police have submitted paperwork to the Department of Motor Vehicles, asking the agency to re-test the 97-year-old’s driving abilities due to his advanced age. This move isn’t unheard of after police respond to the scene of an accident involving a senior driver. As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports, older adults’ driving abilities can be affected by changes in vision, physical function and ability to reason, while people 70 and older have higher death rates per 1,000 crashes than people in younger age groups. On the morning of March 15, police in Malibu responded to an accident involving a silver sedan that had crashed into a gate, TMZ reported. There, they found the TV and film legend behind the wheel of a  2018 Lexus LS 500. Van Dyke said that his car slid, and he lost control before it slammed into the gate. That morning, roads in the area we...

Endangered status sought for gopher tortoise in 4 states ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Gopher tortoises imperiled by loss of habitat largely caused by human development should be placed on the endangered species list in four southern states, environmental groups said Wednesday as they prepared to sue the federal government over the issue. The Center for Biological Diversity and Nokuse Education filed a notice of intent to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service over its decision last year not to list the gopher tortoise as endangered or threatened in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and eastern Alabama. The center noted there are some state-level protections for the burrowing tortoises but those generally require the animals to be moved from a development site and do not protect their habitat overall. The tortoises have lost 97% of the longleaf pine savannas where they lived for millions of years in the South.“Without lifesaving Endangered Species Act protection for our gopher tortoises, urban sprawl will keep driving them ever closer to extin...
