TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down more than 150 points in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the energy, telecom and financial sectors, while U.S. stock markets were mixed.The S&P/TSX composite index was down 156.60 points at 19,771.09.In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 119.48 points at 32,680.44. MONTREAL — Freedom Mobile will offer a $50 plan that includes unlimited calls and texts as well as 40 GB of data usable nationwide and in the U.S. following its acquisition by Quebecor Inc.’s Videotron.The $2.85 billion deal was prompted by Rogers Communications Inc.’s takeover of Shaw Communications Inc., which agreed last year to sell Freedom Mobile in an attempt to ease competition concerns as a requirement for the merger. The United States grew older, faster, last decade.The share of residents 65 or older grew by more than a third from 2010 to 2020 and at the fastest rate of any decade in 130 years, while the share of children declined, according to new figures from the most recent census.The declining percentage of children under age 5 was particularly noteworthy in the figures from the 2020 head count released Thursday. (WCBD) – South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster (R) signed the Fetal Heartbeat and Protections from Abortion Act, S.474, into law on Thursday morning while surrounded by members of the General Assembly.After calling lawmakers back into special session, House lawmakers passed the controversial legislation on May 17 after days of debate. It was later sent to the state Senate, where it also passed.According to Gov. McMaster’s office, the bill prohibits abortion in South Carolina after a fetal heartbeat has been detected, effectively banning most abortions in the state after about six weeks. (WOOD) — A northern Michigan man faces federal charges for allegedly dredging the Platte River last summer in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.Mark Totten, the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Michigan, announced Wednesday that 62-year-old Andrew Howard, of Frankfort, has been charged with one count of tampering and one count of vandalism.“These allegations of tampering and vandalism by a man-made diversion of water at Platte River are disturbing,” Totten said in a statement. “The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and the Great Lakes are national gems, and my office takes preserving our natural treasures very seriously.”The incident came in the wake of a debate over the river.
