DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Tigers juggled their roster before Saturday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.Detroit activated outfielder Riley Greene from the injured list. Greene, who was sidelined since May 31 with a stress reaction in his left fibula, led the team in most offensive categories before the injury. The Tigers also activated pitcher Beau Brieske (elbow) from the 60-day injured list. He went 3-6 with a 4.19 ERA in 15 starts last season, but will pitch out of the bullpen at this point.Detroit optioned pitcher Alex Faedo to Triple-A Toledo after he gave up seven runs in Friday’s 12-2 loss to the Blue Jays. The Tigers also designated infielder Jonathan Schoop for assignment to make room for Greene on the active roster and Brieske on the 40-man roster. The 31-year-old is hitting .213 with no home runs in 55 games this season.___AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb and https://twitter.com/AP_SportsSourceLIV Golf London Par Scores

Published Tue, 05 Nov 2024 03:39:13 GMT
The Chicago Cubs and shortstop Dansby Swanson are playing it safe with his injury.Ahead of the four-day All-Star break beginning Monday, Swanson went on the 10-day injured list before Saturday’s 6-3 loss at Yankee Stadium because of his bruised left heel. The Cubs recalled infielder Miles Mastrobuoni, who started Saturday at third base. The move is retroactive to Thursday, setting up Swanson to return as soon as July 16 versus the Boston Red Sox at Wrigley Field. Swanson hasn’t played since he sustained the injury Wednesday in Milwaukee.“I mean, unfortunately we’re in this position,” Swanson said Saturday. “I feel like it was almost in a way like a good insurance policy to not lose some of the retroactive days. So it stinks, but we have to make the best decision possible for the group.”The timing sets up Swanson to potentially miss only two games after the All-Star break — if he doesn’t need any more time for his heel to recover.A...Giancarlo Stanton’s two-homer day fuels Yankees’ offense in win over Cubs

Between injuries and offensive struggles, little has gone Giancarlo Stanton’s way this season. That wasn’t the case in the Yankees’ 6-3 win over the Cubs on Saturday, though.Stanton carried the Yankees’ offense while enjoying his first multi-dinger game since May 12 of last year with two very different home runs. The first, a 118.1-mph solo shot in the opening frame, traveled 447 feet to the Audi Club in left field. The luxury seats, which are behind glass, hang above the second deck.Cubs left fielder Ian Happ took a few steps in reaction to the moonshot, but he quickly paused to watch the ball sail over his head. While Stanton’s initial blast had an expected batting average of 1.000, his second home run was the ultimate porch job. After review, Stanton came away with a two-run homer by lofting a pitch 322 feet to right field. He doinked the ball off the very bottom of the right field foul pole. Hit at 91.3 mph, the expected batting average was just .050.T...Red Sox Notebook: Alex Cora cautiously optimistic about Tanner Houck’s progress

Less than a month after taking a line drive to the face, Tanner Houck is healing, working out, and ready to start throwing next week. The 27-year-old right-hander suffered a facial fracture while pitching against the Yankees on June 16. He was fortunate to escape further damage, but the surgically-inserted plate will remain in his cheek for the rest of his life.Originally slated to begin the season in the bullpen, the Red Sox moved Houck back to the rotation when several starters weren’t ready for Opening Day. It proved to be a blessing in disguise, as the 27-year-old righty immediately and consistently proved himself. His 5.05 ERA and 4.42 FIP across 13 starts don’t tell the full story of his value this season. While his fellow starters began the season unable to pitch deeper than three or four innings, Houck has consistently gone the distance. In 10 of his 12 starts before his injury, he went five or more innings. Both of his last two games were against the New York Yank...Charles Manson cult follower Leslie Van Houten likely close to freedom

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California’s governor announced Friday that he won’t ask the state Supreme Court to block parole for Charles Manson follower Leslie Van Houten, paving the way for her release after serving 53 years in prison for two infamous murders. In a brief statement, the governor’s office said it was unlikely that the state’s high court would consider an appeal of a lower court ruling that Van Houten should be released.Gov. Gavin Newsom is disappointed, the statement said.“More than 50 years after the Manson cult committed these brutal killings, the victims’ families still feel the impact,” the statement said.Van Houten, now in her 70s, is serving a life sentence for helping Manson and other followers in the 1969 killings of Leno LaBianca, a grocer in Los Angeles, and his wife, Rosemary.Van Houten could be freed in about two weeks after the parole board reviews her record and processes paperwork for her release from the California Institution for Women in Corona, her attorney ...Man on scooter shoots randomly in NYC, police say, killing an 86-year-old and wounding 2 others

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Israel’s anti-government protest movement gained new momentum on Saturday night as tens of thousands of people spilled into the streets of cities across the country to oppose Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s contentious plan to overhaul the country’s judicial system. The grassroots movement has staged protests for over six months since Netanyahu’s government unveiled the overhaul plan. But in recent weeks, the protests had shown signs of weakening.Plans by the government to push forward with the overhaul next week in parliament, coupled with the firing of Tel Aviv’s police chief, who was accused of being too sympathetic to the protesters, appeared to breathe new life into Saturday’s demonstrations. Some 150,000 people thronged central Tel Aviv, with large rallies in Jerusalem and other major cities.Netanyahu’s allies have proposed a series of changes to the Israeli legal system aimed at weakening what they say are th...Megan Rapinoe says she’ll retire after the NWSL season and her 4th World Cup
