SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks players huddled together on the ice near the end of Wednesday’s practice for a few minutes. There wasn’t any grand, fiery speech – at least nothing discernable from a few dozen feet away — and it ended after a short while with the group sharing a small laugh.Players after practice were hesitant to say what the meeting was about. Perhaps the theme, though, was to remain unified even though the Sharks are off to an 0-2-1 start, one year after they began the season with five straight regulation-time losses.“When you lose a few games, you have to come together,” Sharks goalie Kaapo Kahkonen said. “You can’t blame each other. You can’t point fingers.”Kahkonen will start Thursday when the Sharks face the Boston Bruins to end their season-opening four-game homestand, and job No. 1 for the skaters in front of him is to cut down on the number of shots their goaltender has to face. The Sharks allowed a combined 94 shots in losses to the ...Jim Jordan loses second vote for House speaker amid steep GOP opposition

(CNN) — Republican Rep. Jim Jordan again failed to win the House speaker&#’;s gavel in a second vote on Wednesday, drawing less support than in an initial vote the day before. The loss raises serious questions over whether the Ohio Republican has a viable path forward as he confronts steep opposition and the House remains in a state of paralysis.During the first round of voting on Tuesday, 20 House Republicans voted against Jordan. On Wednesday, that number rose to 22, showing that the opposition against the candidate has grown. There were four new Republican votes against Jordan and two that flipped into his column. Given the narrow House GOP majority, Jordan can only afford to lose a handful of votes and the high number of votes against him puts the gavel far out of reach. As pressure grows on Republicans to find a way out of the leadership crisis, some are pushing to expand the powers of the interim speaker, Republican Rep. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina. FREMONT — A tech company that specializes in electronics manufacturing has revealed plans to slash well over 100 jobs in the East Bay, a fresh round of layoffs to jolt the Bay Area’s wobbly technology sector.Jabil, which manufactures electronics on a contract basis, has decided to cut 140 jobs in Fremont, according to an official filing with the state labor agency. The layoffs are slated to be effective around Nov. 10, Jabil said in its letter to the state Employment Development Department. The job cuts are expected to be permanent, Valeria Vargas, a Jabil human resources partner, wrote in the letter to the EDD.“We do not anticipate that these employees will return to work in the foreseeable future,” Vargas stated in the WARN notice the tech company filed with the state government.During 2023, Jabil has revealed plans for several rounds of layoffs affecting workers in the Bay Area, this news organization’s review of multiple EDD WARN notices shows. So far ...Letters: Balanced coverage | Off the hook | Hamas’ destruction | Perpetuating division

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Aaron Jones was on his way to scoring his second touchdown in the Green Bay Packers’ season-opening victory at Chicago when he clutched his left hamstring before crossing the goal line.Jones’ season — and the Packers’ offense — haven’t been the same since. He’s hoping that changes Sunday in Denver. The 28-year-old Jones has missed three of Green Bay’s past four games because of that hamstring issue. Without their most proven playmaker, the young Packers offense has struggled.“It can be hard on yourself, not playing when you want to play, not having that effect you want to have,” Jones said. “Especially coming into this year, I felt like I was just heating up, especially Week 1, it was like, ‘Aww, man it’s going to be a long year for these guys lining up across from me.'”Instead, it’s been a long wait for Jones to get back to full strength. But Jones says he recovered during Green Bay’s bye week and feels as well as he has since before the injury.He’...Brazil’s Bolsonaro should be charged with attempting to stage a coup, congressional panel says

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — A Brazilian congressional panel on Wednesday accused former President Jair Bolsonaro of instigating the country’s Jan. 8 riots and recommended that he be charged with attempting to stage a coup.An inquiry panel of senators and representatives mostly allied with the current leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva — who narrowly defeated Bolsonaro in last fall’s election — voted 20-11 to adopt the damning report drafted by Sen. Eliziane Gama. The move was largely symbolic because it amounts to a recommendation for police and prosecutors to investigate, and federal law enforcement officials separately have already been investigating Bolsonaro’s possible role in inciting the Jan. 8 uprising.Bolsonaro has denied involvement in the rioting, which took place more than a week after the right-wing leader had quietly left the country to stay in Florida while refusing to attend Lula’s inauguration.“It’s completely biased,” Bolsonaro said Wednesday of the inquiry, in co...GOP’s Jim Jordan fails again to win vote to become House speaker and colleagues seek other options

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Rep. Jim Jordan failed again Wednesday on a crucial second ballot to become House speaker, the hard-fighting ally of Donald Trump losing even more GOP colleagues who are refusing to give him the gavel.Next steps were highly uncertain as angry, frustrated Republicans looked at other options. A bipartisan group of lawmakers floated an extraordinary plan — to give the interim speaker pro tempore, Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., more power to reopen the immobilized House and temporarily conduct routine business. What was clear was that Jordan’s path to become House speaker was almost certainly lost. He was opposed by 22 Republicans, two more than he lost in first round voting the day before. No further votes Wednesday were scheduled. “We’ll keep talking to members, keep working on it,” Jordan, a founding member of the hard-right Freedom Caucus, said after the vote, vowing to stay in the race. The House came to another abrupt standstill, stuck now 15...Single dad and former Marine ‘grunt’ running Marine Corps Marathon’s 50K knows all about overcoming adversity

While thousands will run the 26.2 miles of the Marine Corps Marathon in D.C., there are some who will tack on some additional miles and run 50 kilometers.Former Marine Phil Pinti is accustomed to taking in a little bit more both on the racecourse and in life. And, he’s no stranger to the twists and turns of both.“Slow is smooth and smooth is fast” is the main piece of advice that Pinti would give to many new runners who will attempt the Marine Corps Marathon for the first time. That means slowing everything down, including our breathing, and taking stock of what’s around you, especially the other people running the race with you.“You realize that it’s ultimately not just about yourself; you’re a part of this running community,” Pinti said during a video chat — his running medals can be seen in the background.Pinti said the marathon is not just about running for him; it’s about courage, commitment and overcoming adversity. In 2016, Pinti’...Latest news
