LONDON — Closer integration with the European Union has been a taboo for a generation of British Conservatives — but in the realm of defense at least, Rishi Sunak’s government seems to be taking another look. This week, Armed Forces Minister James Heappey told the House of Commons that Brussels and London had achieved a consensus on the “majority” of an agreement for the U.K. to join a military project under the EU’s defense coordination group, known as the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO.) It is a dramatic reversal given only three years have passed since the British government, led then by Boris Johnson, emphatically rejected a post-Brexit deal on foreign policy and defense put forward by the EU’s chief Brexit negotiator. And the reversal is making some Euro-sceptics in the ruling Conservative party rather uncomfortable. But as the U.K. seeks a new place in the world outside the bloc, and with Russia waging war in Ukraine and stepping up its aggression against the West, Brita...No-hit attempt for Red Sox RHP Brayan Bello ends with 8th-inning infield single

BOSTON (AP) — The first hit against Brayan Bello was a slow roller up the middle that barely reached the outfield. Red Sox shortstop Kiké Hernández dove and gloved it, but his off-balance, off-one-knee throw bounced harmlessly to first base. The second hit came right after — still with nobody out in the eighth inning. And the third broke a scoreless tie and turned Bello’s near no-hitter into a loss.“Today wasn’t my day to have a complete game,” Bello said after pitching seven no-hit innings only to see the Marlins beat the Red Sox 2-0. “But it’s going to come soon.”Bello allowed just two baserunners through seven: Jazz Chisholm reached on a fielding error by first baseman Justin Turner leading off the second and Jesús Sánchez walked to lead off the third. Bello retired major league batting leader Luis Arraez three times, including a line drive that Bello stabbed to end the third inning.“That guy threw a really good game,” said Arraez, whose batting average dropped fro...Jared Young creating more options for the Chicago Cubs despite series sweep by the Philadelphia Phillies

It feels like the right spot for me and it’s one of those things where I just want to keep going.”After hitting his first career home run in his first major league at-bat of the season Wednesday, Young was back in the starting lineup Thursday, playing first base and batting eighth. He had an RBI triple to drive in the Cubs’ lone run in a 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, who completed a three-game sweep at Wrigley Field.Young ripped a triple down the right-field line to drive in Cody Bellinger in the second inning. Ambulance crews see the toll up close

BANPUR, India (AP) — Siren blaring, Sunil Kumar Naik’s ambulance tore across a dry and rocky countryside blasted by dangerous midday heat, rushing to check on a vomiting and dizzy 30-year-old man with possible heat stroke. As soon as they reached the man’s village, Naik’s paramedic partner guided the stricken man into the ambulance, then checked his pulse and oxygen levels as Naik sped back to the public hospital. With barely a moment to drink some water and splash their faces, the men were dispatched again, this time to pick up a pregnant woman who had gone into labor as the temperature soared to 43 degrees Celsius (109.4 Fahrenheit). And so went another furious 12-hour shift in India’s increasingly deadly summer, when Naik and paramedic Jitendra Kumar sometimes find themselves hurrying to as many as twice the usual number of calls.Extreme heat is fast becoming a public health crisis in India, with more than 150 people dying during the latest brutal heat wave...Latest news
