Late-season storm to bring light rain, snow to Southern California

Cooler and cloudier conditions are coming to Southern California with periods of light rain and drizzle, along with a low chance for thunderstorms, between Tuesday and Thursday, before drier, warmer weather moves in for the weekend, the National Weather Service forecasted. As the late-season storm system moves southward, the chances of rainfall will increase across Ventura and Los Angeles counties Tuesday night through Thursday. “Still high confidence in on and off rain for the area Tues-Thurs, with the peak of the rain falling Wed night-Thurs,” NWS said. “There is a 10-20% chance for thunderstorms too, and colder temps will allow for mtn snow, potentially at the Tejon Pass.” Rainfall totals are expected to range between 0.25 to 0.50 inches along coastal and valley regions, and as much as an inch across the mountains and foothills. Snow levels are forecast to drop to elevations of 4,000 to 5,000 feet, with as much as 6 inches accumulating at higher elevations. There’s a reason home smoke alarms work. Early fire detection can save lives and property. That also holds true for wildfires. “The whole key to keeping these fires small is rapid response,” said Orange County Fire Authority Chief Brian Fennessy. “So, any tool that will allow us to respond much faster is going to be key to it.” Newport Beach 15-year-old Ryan Honary believes he’s developed just such a tool. It’s basically a smoke alarm for remote areas at risk for wildfires. The small device runs on two AA batteries and has three sensors that Ryan says can detect smoke, flames and heat. Ryan envisions deploying the devices all around remote, fire prone areas. He says the system is designed to work even in canyons with no cellular coverage. That's because he designed it as a mesh network, where one device can send information to other devices until that information finally reaches some of his other equipment that does have a cellular signal.&...Authorities open murder investigation after Long Beach resident dies following altercation with roommate

SANTA CLARA — The NFL Draft is over but the 49ers’ news never stops. That doesn’t mean it’s necessarily worth alerting you to new jersey numbers for cornerback Deommodore Lenoir (No. 2) and offensive lineman Jason Poe (No. 51). Instead, this mailbag answers more pressing matters:Did any team call for a Trey Lance trade? (@54_alann)Unlike a year ago, when Kyle Shanahan said the offers for Deebo Samuel were “not even close” to market value, they didn’t disclose this time what interest Lance received. John Lynch did say before the draft there was “a lot of smoke, really” on trade calls. Lynch said it would take a significant package to move Lance, and why should they? He should be running the on-field practices right now, with Brock Purdy rehabilitating his elbow and Sam Darnold (No. 14) getting caught up to speed in a complex offense. And those trade calls for Lance should come back in October, if Purdy is a healthy QB1.I know we restructured CMC’s contract, bu...Bay Area tech layoffs in 2023 already top the total for all of 2022

The data are alarming, code red! In 2022 according to the California Department of Education 33% of California’s students met math standards and 47% met English Language Arts standards. And in San Jose, the capital of Silicon Valley, our students score significantly below the state average. Here are the facts, just the facts, most education leaders do not want you to know.In 2023 San Jose school systems are experiencing downward trending achievement levels and higher absenteeism. That said, very few of our community leaders discuss the seriousness of the problem for our collective benefit. This must change. Our children are the beneficiaries of a quality public education system in life and in the community to careers. Our democracy and economy depend on their success in our public schools. Achievement and opportunity gaps have persisted for decades and continue to cost us the future of our most marginalized students.Ultimately, school district governing boards are responsibl...Opinon: Lack of environmental law reform threatens California’s future

Like our changing climate and its many impacts on our communities, economy and environment; like the collapse of critical infrastructure; like the humanitarian homelessness crisis on our streets and the housing shortage driving it; like so many other slow-motion disasters that have befallen us, the warning signs have been unmistakably clear. And just as often, we have ignored them, denied them and been slow to act.Untold volumes have been written about California’s signature environmental law and how over the past five decades it has metastasized through judicial activism and other means to become a signature obstacle to progress. Examples are legion and often ludicrous, and the evidence presented in mountains of research indisputable. For all its good intentions and good outcomes, the California Environmental Quality Act, or CEQA, has been increasingly exploited and perverted to slow or block everything from bike lanes and solar installations to affordable infill housing and homeles...The 10 most expensive homes reported sold in Danville, San Ramon, Dublin, Pleasanton in the week of April 24
