Libya floods: EU mobilizes emergency assistance via its Civil Protection Mechanism

Following the 12 September request for international assistance by the Permanent Mission of the State of Libya to the United Nations office in Geneva, the EU Civil Protection Mechanism has been activated to support Libya in the aftermath of the major flood that has left thousands of casualties.Immediately, EU member states – so far Germany, Romania, Finland - have offered substantial assistance in the form of shelter items such as tents, field beds and blankets, 80 generators, food items, as well as hospital tents and water tanks via the Mechanism. The EU's Emergency Response Coordination Centre stands ready to coordinate further offers of assistance.Furthermore, the EU has released an initial €500,000 in humanitarian funding to tackle the most urgent needs of people in Libya affected by the impact of Storm Daniel. The bodies of two men who disappeared into the water after a tubing accident in Lake Perris Wednesday afternoon have been recovered. One body was pulled from the water around 2:30 p.m. Thursday, while the other was recovered around 5 p.m. California State Parks dispatchers received a distress call around 4 p.m. Wednesday reporting an accident in the boating zone just north of Alessandro Island. The person who called in the report told responders a man was tubing behind their boat when he fell into the water and could not swim back to the tube. Another man, who was a passenger on the boat, then jumped into the water to attempt to rescue the tuber and also began to struggle. Both men went under the water in distress and did not surface, a State Parks official confirmed. (KRON) -- A Sonoma County Sheriff's Office deputy found 23 pounds of methamphetamine in a car in Sonoma, SCSO said on Facebook.
